Towards the finale..........

DISCOVERATORS



During this week we finished all our research work and then went on to complete our formative assessments by presenting our research findings of the last two lines of inquiries by using different media like power points and charts. We also self assessed our work using Mrs. Potter's questions. After finishing our formative assessments, we planned  the layout of the panel and figured out how we would put the information on it. Then we collected all the resources we needed for the panel. We finally started putting our work on the panels and decorated  it by putting  borders, making interesting ways of making the heading etc. We are now at the edge of finishing our panels, making the models, putting up the photo exhibits on the board, scripts etc.

INDIVIDUAL MINDS

For the whole week we have been working on our Summative task.  Some of us have put it up and we are working on what we will say.  On Monday we will have a mock PYP Exhibition.  During the week we have been figuring out ways to present our work.  Our mentor, Malini Ma’am, gave us steps on how we should present our work.  We have also been working with Norbu Sir and putting together a street play.  We made the script and Norbu Sir is just helping us put it together.  It’s been AWESOME!!!

HISTORICAL OLYMPIANS



We started working on our panels this week which consisted of information done through our research work. We researched on different lives and personalities such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Neil Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin and William Shakespeare. We collated pictures, information, surveys and much more. We are preparing a play as well for our final presentation. This play will be assessed by Jim Sir as our summative task. The play has individual acts about different personalities and comedy when they all meet together. We are having our rehearsals in the MPH and working hard to for our summative task.

Wins is a new student in PYP and he is learning how to summarize the information and how to write in bullet points. Raina is learning how to do the planning for the presentation that is - cutting the paper   for the heading of the presentation. Today we all had a Skype session. We interacted with the school children of Vishiva Shanti Gurukul of Pune in Skype session. We are practicing how to organize space on the panel by taking out black and white print outs, keeping it on the panel and then checking  if the print outs are of the correct  size or not.

FUNNY DISCOVERERS

In the last 2 weeks in the PYP Exhibition, We stuck 6 A4 papers together which then became our timeline. We started finishing off typing and formatting the information and then we started laying out the formatted information on the boards and mounting the printed information on different colored A3 papers. As the deadline was coming nearer the pressure was on and we were thoroughly practising our lines and deciding what to say in the different circumstances and situations that can come. Various schools are going to view our presentations and so all of us are excited and nervous. We are on the verge of finishing our presentations as we have put all the information on the boards as we want it while we are presenting.

TIME TRAVELLERS


16th April 2012

Today we worked on our 2nd line of inquiry and were getting ready for our formative assessments. Some of the students made Power Point Presentations (PPT) and some made E-Booklets. Then we had presented our second line of inquiry to our mentor and to our group members.

17th of April 2012

We again continued presenting our presentations for formative assessments. When we had finished our formative assessments, then we started working on our panel lay outs.
18th April 2012
We started working on our panels, decorating and pasting our some of the information and pictures to make it more attractive as per our panel lay out.


19th April 2012
We continued to work on panels and some students also researched for 3rd line of inquiry. We enthusiastically worked to make it interesting and informative. I and Aryan were the first ones to finish our panels, where as others were still working on it.

20th April 2012

Today Khushbu and Kritee finished working on their panels, Stijn was still working on his panel about the
History of Rome. Gourav is also still working on his panel

UNIVERSAL EXPLORERS

This week (16/4/12 to 20/4/12), The Universal Explorers had a lot of fun while working on their panels. They completed their presentations on the second and third line of inquiry. We had also invited a guest speaker from the National Geographic Channel. She told us about the recent explorers and their explorations. She also did a quiz with us and then gave us educational CDs if we answered correctly.

We then made a panel plan and started completing our panels and giving the finishing touches.
We are now practicing and planning for our performance.


MAD PHYSICISTS

We prepared our panels for the PYP exhibition. We started pasting our work on the panels. We practiced our skit on Archimedes. We have been visiting DT lab to make props for the play. We made a telescope for our skit on Galileo. We made the script for Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Today we did a mock skype session with of the school in Pune.

Staging the PYP Exhibition

As students ready themselves for the final staging of the PYP Exhibition, giving finishing touches to their work, deftly practising their performances and winding up all their documentation, the energy levels on the 2nd floor of Panini are electrically charged with the excitement of reaching the grand finale of this amazing learning journey. The students are excitedly waiting to interact with 4 schools from India, Norway, Australia and Indonesia through Skype showcasing their PYP Exhibition, and welcoming students from Grades 4, 6 and 9 from our own school, along with students from 2 other local PYP schools. Apart from that also is the proud moment of sharing all their learning with their own parents and the school management. Learning is endless, and though, our students have reached the end of this journey of the Exhibition, we know that each child has not only grown more independent and able to learn, but they are also initiating their own inquiries in the real world. We wish them all the best and hope their quest for learning is a life-long one!

Working towards the Big Day.........

9th to 13th April, 2012

DISCOVERATORS


The entire week was filled up with a lot of excitement as we geared up for our formative assessment on the first line of inquiry. Our group members used a variety of media to present their research findings. While Mansha, Rhythm, Tia and Ashwin used charts,Aashna used MS- Power point. Vikram and Juyoung had an oral presentation of their work. Each of us assessed each other using the checklist created by us. Then we began the research on the 2nd and the 3rd lines of inquiry. We also roughly planned the layout of our panels and made a list of resources that we will need to display our research findings. Mansha, Tia and Aashna started making their paper mache globe on which they intend to show the migration around the world. Tia and Aashna also interviewed Tuli Didi, a support staff in Pathways to know more about economic migration. Vikram visited the senior school and got valuable information on the discovery of DNA by interacting with Ms. Mesha Das, the Biology teacher. It was indeed a very interesting and challenging week.

TIME TRAVELLERS

5th April, 2012

Planning for a trip…

Today we planned to go for a field trip to a museum to further our knowledge on our topics of research. It took very little time to decide that we wanted to go to National Gallery of Modern Art and the National Delhi Museum. We then quickly drafted a letter seeking permission from Ms. Rima,to visit this places. We finally got a reply  that we may go ahead with it  not on 4th April 2012 but on 11th April 2012.

6th April, 2012

We completed our research and worked on our formative assessment and made the deadlines. We had to prepare for our forthcoming assessment. We tried to make our assessment as creative as possible by adding pictures, writing relevant information and preparing as innovative as we could. We had also started our research on the second line of inquiry...The day was all full of inquiry and inquiry...

9th April, 2012   

Today we presented our formative assessment and got to know about each other's research which was very informative. At the end of each presentation we asked questions. Our mentor saw our presentations and guided us. We also started researching on our 2nd line of inquiry.

10th April, 2012

Today we finished presenting our formative assessment and started working on our 2nd line of inquiry. Also, today 2 students, Kritee and Gourav, went to see the Visual Art Exhibition in the Senior school. The paintings were beautiful and were expressing the painter's vision very innovatively. Some of the paintings that we liked were painted by Saachi, Prerna, Akanksha, Tanya who had painted each using a lot of hues and colours.

11th April, 2012

Today we went on a field trip to the National museum and National Gallery of Modern Art. It was a very nice and educative trip. We got a lot of  information which will help us  in our work.

INDIVIDUAL MINDS


This week was filled with a lot of activities, stress and hard work. This week was dedicated to complete our formatives for our 2nd and 3rd line of inquiry. We, Ananya, Mitali and I, went for a field trip   to the 'National Museum'. We went to different sections to research on our topic. There we were in our 'strand' group with our mentors (if our mentors weren't there, there were parents who volunteered). We gathered as much information as we could. That museum had a lot sculptures and pictures. Shreya went to the gallery of modern art.
Back in school we planned on the displays and also reconnected with our performance. Maam also made us visualise a display for our strand collectively. We did a CSI ( colour, symbol, illustration) on our big idea. Hoping it will work out well!!!!

UNIVERSAL EXPLORERS


This week (9th-13th April) our group (THE UNIVERSAL EXPLORERS) had an amazing week with fun filled activities and outings. We had started the week by continuing some research work for the first line of inquiry: FORM. We had planned a formative assessment for the first line of inquiry. We made a rubric to assess each other for our presentations. On Wednesday our group and a few other groups too went for a field trip to the NATIONAL MUSEUM. It was quite interesting because we saw sculptures, coins from different parts of India, pictures, weapons from which some of the soldiers fought from and maps of the places that some of the Indian explorers had explored. We had a really good time and we also got ICE CREAM! On Thursday we finally got our panels! All of us were really excited! But still had to continue our research. On Friday we presented our formative assessment to each other. We also assessed each other and gained more information from each other’s presentation.

HISTORICAL OLYMPIANS

This week we all completed our formative assessment about our first  Line of inquiry. The boarders learned how to save their document on a pen drive, so that they could use the saved document on the pen drive to work during Evening Prep. We learned how  to use the projector and how to ask questions to the person who is making the presentation. We   also learnt that we have to be prepared with remote control, data cable, extension board  much before the presentation  starts to save time. We also learnt  that we must always cite the source of information because I.B believes in Academic Honesty .

This week, Abhay, Samira and myself went to interview Mr. Shukla, who is the head of visual arts department. We asked him a few questions about Leonardo da Vinci. He told us many things such as in the Renaissance period, artists had studios where people who were interested in art could join and learn about art. The younger students in the studios would also make paint, brushes and canvases out of organic materials for the older students. He also told us that the people who copy others style of work are called craftsmen and the real artists are the people who make their own style. Mr. Shukla also advised us to see the IB Art Exhibition, which had the artworks of Senior School Students. There were sculptures, cartoon style paintings and abstract style paintings. We were able to identify some techniques used by Leonardo in these artworks such as the light and dark shading and perspective.

On Wednesday, 11th April 2012 we went to the Design and Technology  Lab to create some models designed by Leonardo Da Vinci. We chose an aerial screw, a bicycle and a parachute. Mr. James, who is the head of the department guided us with our models and told us how to make the things that we wanted to. We used our mathematical skills to find out the dimensions for our models and drew the same on a hard cardboard. Mr. James told us about the laser cutter, which is used to cut shapes. Since the  laser cutter cannot cut wood or other materials in cylindrical shapes, he guided me to use a metal rod instead. He told us many ways for how we could make our models in a better and easier way.

GUEST LEACTURES

Guest speaker from Middle School – Ms. Kiran Rai -12th April 2012 on the topic- History of Delhi

Today 4 of us went to the middle school ‘s history  teacher Ms. Kiran Rai. She gave us a lot of information on history of India and Delhi. She also told us about Ancient , Medieval  and Modern History and cultures and difference from past to present. 

Ms. Kiran told us that in early times Delhi was known as Indraphastha. She also told differences in clothes, food, dance, warfare etc.  Ms. Kiran also told about Rajput kings, Mughals  and  about Qutub  Minar and about Qutubuddin Aibak who   started  to build  Qutub Minar and who finished building it. Ms. Kiran also talked about the British  rule and more about the history of India and Delhi.

Guest lecture by Ms. Mesha Das on the Discovery of DNA


On 13th April, I interacted with Ms. Mesha Das who teaches Biology in the Senior School to know more about the discovery of  DNA and other related information. She told me how DNA was discovered in the early 1950s, how it can be extracted and used for helping mankind. She also told me how discovery and extraction of DNA led to other related discoveries that changed the world.

Interview with Tuli Didi

For our topic on migrations we interviewed one of the support staff, Tuli Didi to know more her migration from Kolkata to Gurgaon. We asked her the questions on our questionnaire sheet and got some information. We found out why she migrated from Kolkata to Gurgaon, how she migrated to earn more money and the problems she faced after migrating like getting used to the new culture and language. She also told us she adapted to the new environment and learnt Hindi to communicate with the local populace.

FIELD TRIPS 

Akshardham
On 11th April our group (Anant, Rishit, Aaryaman, Harsh & Shrawan) went for research work for our PYP Exhibition to Akshardham Temple and our Science and Technology Heritage Museum. Akshardam Temple is made as a tribute to Swaminarayan. Ten Gates reflect the Vedic sentiments of inviting goodness. We saw the Hall Of Values, a giant screen theatre and went for the underground boat ride. On the boat ride we were surprised to know that most important discoveries and inventions were done many many years ago. For eg. Aryabhatt (476) CE was the first to proclaim that the earth is round and is rotates on its axis, orbits the sun and is suspended in space. Acharya kanad (600BCE) discovered the power of "Vaisheshik Darshan" or the ATOMIC THEORY. He classified all the objects of creation into nine elements of earth, water, light, wind, time, space, mind and soul. As per his theory every object of creation is made of atoms.  We really learnt a lot on this trip.

Sankalp) went for research work for our PYP Exhibition to 


the National Museum in New Delhi. We all went for different kinds of information even though we all visited the same sections in the Museum. We saw and learnt a lot about the Harappan Civilization which showed us the Mohenjo-Daro, the big bath, and other aspects of their times.
We saw artifacts and collectibles including coins, clothes, and clay models that were made and discovered by people. We learnt a lot and got a lot of information for our research on discoveries of different places. It was a great opportunity to learn more.

National Gallery of Modern Arts

Today we went on a field trip to the National museum and National Gallery of Modern Art. It was a very nice and educative trip. We got much information which will help us a lot in our work. We were dropped off in different museums but we were on the same bus.

Visit to The Senior School Art Exhibition on 10th April 2012

Today Kritee and I went to see the Senior School Art Exhibition on 10th April 2012. Devendra Shukla Sir asked us to come and see that. We saw lots of paintings made by Senior School students , like Saachi Singh, Tanya, Prerna, Akansha etc. They used different techniques to make the paintings. Some paintings had dull and some had very bright colors. All the paintings were made on canvases.  They all used different shapes and some of the students made their self portrait to describe themselves.  We really got very valuable information and inspiration from viewing this Exhibition.

VISIT TO NATIONAL CRAFTS MUSEUM
On the 11th April, our group the Speedy Travellers visited the National Crafts Museum, Delhi. We all gathered at Vatika city and as soon as Paras’ car stopped, we all jumped inside and started off our journey. The National Crafts museum, situated on Bhairon Marg near Pragati Maidan, is one of its kinds not only in India but also in entire Asia-Pacific. It has got some of the best collections of artworks in Asia. There is an interesting fact about its establishment. It was originally established to act as a place where artisans from the entire country would gather and learn how to preserve their traditional art in the era of globalization. Nevertheless it actually became a place where artisans from all over the India started exhibiting their art. 


We were delighted to see the ambience of a village. It is situated in the Village complex, which among others has various forms of village habitat and housings on the display. It has a permanent collection of over 20,000 items of folk and tribal arts, crafts and textiles from various parts of the country. We saw lamps, chandeliers, lamp-stands, drapes, clay and terracotta pots, folk and tribal paintings, embroidered bed sheets and cushion covers, jewelries, cane and bamboo work of different states in different galleries of the museum. They all expressed the different cultures through terracotta sculpture, painting, courtyards, huts, etc. We clicked many photographs outside as photography was not allowed inside the gallery.

PYP Exhibition- Work in full swing


INDIVIDUAL MINDS ( 26th March to 6th April, 12)

We , the Individual Minds, started working as a group and it was FUN! Once we had framed our Central Idea but since our group is DIFFERENT we ended up having four different Central Ideas!!! After that we framed our Lines of Inquiry. This was not difficult……. But then came the Student Planner where we had to fill in the resources, student questions and our plans…….. this was really hard… IT WAS! The nine stage PYP Planner followed and this was no easy a task but since our group is AWSUM we finished it on time.
We planned our provocation and reflected through a Y chart and assessed our prior knowledge through a Sunshine Wheel. Surprisingly things started to become interesting. We were actually doing what we were planning ourselves.
We proceeded with our inquiries.  Most of us have finished researching on our first line of Inquiry. We have also done our first formative task. We have been working on our second line of inquiry this week and plan to work over the weekend to present it. We have read relevant poems and literature to understand more and Shreya has looked into the paintings by artists.
God ! A lot of work but we are having fun………………

HISTORICAL OLYMPIANS

26th March to 30th March
In the first week   we framed our central idea and brainstormed about the Lines of Inquiry. We also framed our guiding questions connected to our Lines of Inquiry.We decided our group name that is Historical  Olympians . We then went to M.P.H.  for deciding “Our Essential Agreements”

2ND April to 6th April
In the second week  we worked on our Student Planner . Then we made our questions for our research. We also found out the meanings of key terms like influence and connection to show our real understanding of the Central Idea . We collected our  information about  the questions  from library texts, websites . Then we started planning interviews , field trips and guest speakers.

We were introduced to the PYP Planner. We were explained each section of the planner by Abhimanyu Sir after which he asked us to divide a plain sheet of paper into a few folds and make sections. We tried to show our understanding of each section of the planner by writing relevant details in each section of the plain sheet. We also discussed the provocations for our inquiry such as books, internet, videos etc. We also went to the library to find some books related to our topic we would be inquiring into. We filled the sections 1 - 5 of the planner and decided the medium of our performance. We completed the planner and started the research in the ICT lab to find out some places we could go on a field trip. We also submitted our planning sheets to our mentor. We continued our research to find out information on the 1st line of inquiry i.e major discoveries and each member found information on the discovery that he/she is working on. Some members drafted letters of permission for interview. 

We also created our group's gmail account so that we could use Google Docs for sharing information with each other. We have started uploading our research work on the same for sharing information and for our mentor to see what we are doing. Some group members watched videos that they had found out. We also decided on the primary resources within school to interview and fixed appointments.

MAD PHYSICISTS

We started the week with research on the first line of inquiry and made the fair presentation too. We prepared our prior knowledge quiz. We made a chart, logo and group name. We collected our prior knowledge assessment. We researched on our second line of inquiry and prepared the questions for the interview/guest speaker from a senior Physics faculty. We prepared our fair draft of the first and second line of inquiry and also the final draft for our guest speaker/interview. We arranged a meeting with the physics teacher from senior school.

PYP Exhibition 2012 Days 19-21 19th-21st March

This week, we were able to  finalise the central ideas in our respective groups. We also chose key concepts and the lines of inquiry which will guide our research. We also completed our planning sheets and decided the primary and secondary resources that we will use and the way we will present our findings.

PYP Exhibition LOGO


We designed and created the PYP Exhibition logo with the help of the Visual Art teacher Ms. Isha. First, we found out the objects and people which were related to place and time. Then, we made individual layouts of the logo, finalised one and designed the logo. We were helped by Mr. Jim who added some digital effects and the transdisciplinary theme to the logo.
